Not a textbook, but a scene. Not a definition — an experience.
Act I - Illusion of Control
me
Hey, couldn't we just hyper-focus and get everything done now? Just once in a lifetime, on demand?
brain
(that is HyperFocus, in a dramatic voice) Oh, how charmingly naive! You don’t choose when I arrive. This isn’t “HyperFocus — activate!”. This isn’t anime. It’s a curse.
me
So I can't summon you when I really need to focus?
brain
(that is HyperFocus) No, no. That's not how it works. It's more like: 'TADAM! Congratulations! For the next 72 hours your life is a candle-making story. Everything else? Irrelevant.'
Act II - Light and Shadows of Hyperfocus
me
But I had other plans...
brain
(with a psychopath’s smile 😈) You don’t have plans anymore. You only have candles. And 48 open tabs in the browser. 🕯️🕯️🕯️
Everything else has just been moved into the folder called: irrelevant.
me
But at least it will be things I like?
brain
Sometimes. And sometimes — medieval farming techniques. 🌾 Or vegetable fermentation. 🥬 Don't ask where it comes from. We just... have to know everything.
me
So it's not passion. It is...?
brain
Addiction. To games 🎮, rollerblading 🛼, crocheting socks 🧶… And today? Creating a world for an RPG campaign. 🗺️🐉
And no, we’re not going to sleep. This is not the time for sleep. This is the time for a perfect map with its own ecosystem and mythology.
Act III - 3 AM Again
me
It's 3 AM again...
brain
…so what? I'm watching the fifth tutorial on YouTube right now. 🎬 This is exactly what we should be doing now!
me
And if someone talks to me?
brain
(the great fermentation monologue) Then the great fermentation monologue begins. 🥬📊 With charts. With diagrams. With passion. They're already looking for an exit, and we're only just explaining the difference between pickling and lactic fermentation.
me
And if someone interrupts me?
brain
(angry 😤) INTERRUPT?! I'm comparing salt concentration tables and drawing a diagram of ideal fermentation! And you're asking: “What do you want for dinner?” This is dinner now! [waving a jar] Eat this! This is all we have.
Act IV - After Leaving
me
And then?
brain
(quietly, dramatically 🎭) Then I disappear. I’m gone. You’re left alone among ruins. Scrolls. Maps. Notes about the naval war of 1942.
And you ask yourself: Why do I have seven books on vegetable fermentation? 🥬📚
me
But I... already knew almost everything! Almost a master!
brain
That means it’s time to leave. Poof. I disappear. And suddenly you don’t care at all.
Those battleships? ⚓ Dead. Yarn? Indifferent. But wait — now we’re learning Swedish 🇸🇪 while rollerblading. LET’S GO.
me
So... where are you now?
brain
(from behind the garage door 🧪🔮) In the lab. I became a fermentation alchemist. 🥬 Pray for your neighbors.
me
Okay. So hyperfocus is not a superpower you can order on demand, but a state that takes over the whole system.
It does not give you controllable productivity. It gives you intensity — and often leaves a cost behind.
And I think that’s exactly why the hardest part is that it never arrives when it would actually be convenient.
